Maintain Your Quality of Life While Treating Your Prostate Cancer

There's a new treatment for patients with localized prostate cancer that is not only helping to save lives, but is doing so without sacrificing the quality of life. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound, or HIFU, is a therapy option for prostate cancer patients where the tumor is still confined to the organ and has not spread to other areas of the body. HIFU is one of the few prostate cancer treatments that can be categorized as a minimally invasive, out-patient, radiation-free procedure. Even if the prostate cancer returns after initial treatment using HIFU, it does not rule out other treatment options and can be used again as needed.

The overall survival rate for prostate cancer depends upon what stage of cancer a patient is in:

Percentage of All Prostate Cancer Cases Stage of Prostate Cancer Location of Tumor 5-Year Survival Rate

91%

Localized

The tumor is confined to the prostate.

100%
91% Regional The cancer has spread to the regional lymph nodes or directly beyond the primary site. 100%
5% Distant Cancer has already metastasized 33.3%

For those with Stage 1 or II (localized) prostate cancer, there are more treatment options available, including High Intensity Focused Ultrasound. There are even a few HIFU options available depending on the specific need for cancer ablation. Each form of HIFU comes with its own results:

Standard HIFU Procedure Focal HIFU Therapy Salvage Treatment

Ablation of the entire prostate gland.

92% of patients are successfully treated.

Over 99% of men remain continent.

70% of men retain erectile function.

Targeted only to the area in the prostate gland where the tumor is located.

95% of patients maintained potency.

89% of men achieved “the trifecta status” (pad-free, leak-free continence, erections sufficient for intercourse and cancer control at 12 months).

Short procedure time (20-90 minutes).

Option for patients with a recurrence of prostate cancer.

71% biochemical disease free rate.

93% of patients remain continent.

According to the International HIFU organization, “over 10,000 men worldwide have already chosen HIFU to treat their prostate disease.” Talk to your doctor about how HIFU may help you maintain your quality of life while treating your prostate cancer.
