The Urinary Bladder and Effects of Prostate Cancer

The urinary bladder is a membranous sac specifically designated to hold urine. The bladder is able to contain urine through the use of the urinary sphincter which is a muscle that humans learn to contract during toilet training. The urinary sphincter also contracts when during ejaculation which forces the semen to exit the body through the urethra and tip of the penis. Certain prostate cancer treatments can damage the effectiveness of the muscle that controls the sphincter. Damaging the sphincter can cause both incontinence as well as retrograde ejaculation. Continence is generally regained as time passes and the body heals after prostate cancer treatment. There are also a variety of products available that can help control incontinence until the body regains this function of control. Kegel exercises can strengthen the urinary sphincter and help men regain continence.
