Thermocouple in Prostate Cancer Cryotherapy

A thermocouple is a device used in cryotherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer. The thermocouple is made up of two different metals and accurately measures the change in temperature. In cryotherapy, usually at least two thermocouples are used to ensure that the prostate gland’s temperature is lowered to negative 40 degrees Celsius or lower. Cryotherapy is a relatively new treatment for prostate cancer. Cryotherapy works by damaging the cells through ice crystal formation and changes in pH levels. This form of prostate cancer is also effective as a salvage treatment when radiation therapy has failed. Failure of radiation therapy usually indicates that prostate cancer has developed radioresistance. Cryotherapy therefore is an effective alternative during salvage therapy.
