Resectoscope and TURP before Prostate Cancer

The resectoscope is a slender instrument used to perform resections. A resection is the surgical removal an organ or part of an organ. The resectoscope allows the surgeon to perform a resection without an incision other than that made by the instrument. In transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), the surgeon performing the resection will actually use the urethra as the point of entry thereby bypassing the need for an incision. Men who have undergone TURP for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia may not be eligible for prostate cancer treatments such as brachytherapy and cryotherapy.
