Mitosis and Prostate Cancer

Mitosis refers to cell division. The cell cycle is made up of stages of growing and storing energy and then dividing to produce to identical daughter cells. When an organism grows, the growth is caused by the multiplying of cells that increase the amount of tissue of the organism. In prostate cancer, a tumor grows on the prostate gland. The cells that make up the tumor are dividing quickly, uncontrollably, and not dying; the growth is the result. Tumor growth refers to its cells undergoing uncontrollable growth. Since the growth and spread of prostate cancer and the prostate cells are fueled by testosterone, removing testosterone from the body or preventing the prostate gland from taking up the hormone, can slow or even halt the progression of the disease.
