Lymph Node Extension and Prostate Cancer

Lymph node extension is the metastasis of prostate cancer to the lymphatic system. Extension to the lymph nodes can be both regional and distant. Regional lymph nodes a for prostate cancer are on either side of the urinary bladder. Distant lymph nodes are located in other areas of the body. In the case of prostate cancer, during radical prostatectomy, the regional lymph nodes are removed and examined by a pathologist. If the patient’s prostate cancer has extended to these nodes, the surgery is usually stopped and another course of treatment pursued.
