Iridium-194 in Prostate Cancer Brachytherapy

Iridium-194 is used in temporary high dose radiation brachytherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer. Sometimes referred to as iridium wire, a single piece is continuously reinserted through thin flexible plastic catheters that go through a prostate cancer patient’s perineum. The procedure is repeated 2 to 3 times over a period of 48 hours after which the patient is released. No iridium is left in the patient’s body.
