Incontinence is the inability to control the flow of urine out of the body. After prostate cancer treatment, incontinence, which may also be classified as urinary side effects may occur. Types of incontinence include urge incontinence, overflow incontinence, and frequency incontinence. In the bladder is a ring of muscles called the urinary sphincter which opens and close to void or retain urine. When this muscles is damaged during prostate cancer treatments, the patient may experience incontinence. There are a variety of products and medications that can treat incontinence and other urinary side effects. Men are usually able to regain control of their bladders as their bodies heal and recover from the treatment.
