Hair Follicles and Prostate Cancer Chemotherapy

Hair follicles are small tubular cavities that hold the roots of shafts of hairs. The hair follicle is considered part of the skin. At the base of the root is a structure called the papilla which contains the cells that produce the strand of hair. The cells of the papilla grow quickly and are vulnerable to the effects of chemotherapy. Patients who begin chemotherapy for the treatment of prostate cancer may lose their hair. Once chemotherapy is stopped, however, hair will grow back.
