Free radicals are produced as byproduct of the oxidation process of metabolism. A free radical is an atom or a group of atoms that is missing one electron in the outer shell. Missing on electron makes the mass highly unstable and capable of reacting with many different substances. Free radicals can cause cellular damage and increase the progression of certain cancers. Some researchers who study prostate cancer believe that consuming foods that have high levels of antioxidants which protect the cells from oxidation can prevent prostate cancer or the growth of prostate cancer. Other researchers believe that foods with the antioxidants that will combat free radicals are generally much healthier than diets with high levels of animal fat consumption. Dietary changes that decrease animal fat consumption and increase fruit and vegetable consumption will benefit overall health and may prevent the onset of prostate cancer.
