Epidural in Prostate Cancer

The epidural space is a space very close to the spinal chord which is located over the dura mater. An injection into this area is usually called the epidural, and the injection causes the patient to lose sensation in the pelvic region. Epidurals are used in prostate cancer treatments such as temporary brachytherapy treatment or other treatments where patients do not wish to undergo general anaesthesia. Prostate cancer patients who opt for epidurals are often given sedatives in addition to decrease anxiety and involuntary movements that could complicate the prostate cancer treatment.
