Dietary supplements
are vitamins, minerals, amino acids, usually in pill
or powder form, that people may consume to enhance their
regular diet. OTC multivitamins are supplements, as
are herbal supplements. Selenium, vitamin E, vitamin
D, beta-carotene, and lycopene have all been linked
with decreased risk of prostate cancer. However, these
elements should already be present in a well-balanced
diet, and some dietary supplements can actually build
up in the body and cause problems. Large quantities
of vitamin E for example can cause vitamin toxicity,
while large quantities of beta-carotene may give the
skin an orange or yellowish tint. Men who are interested
in prostate cancer prevention through diet or supplements
should speak with their doctors before beginning dietary
supplements.
