A corticosteroid is
a hormone steroid or a synthetic equivalent that is
produced by the adrenal glands. The body uses corticosteroids
in the immune response and regulation of inflammation.
During advanced prostate cancer, hormone refractory
prostate cancer, or prostate cancer with distant bone
metastasis, patients may receive a synthetic corticosteroid
while they are undergoing chemotherapy. A common chemotherapy
drug and corticosteroid are mitoxantrone
and prednisone.
