The corpus spongiosum is a column of spongy tissue that surrounds the urethra and contributes to erectile function. The corpus spongiosum does not hold as much blood as the corpora cavernosa, which are the other two columns of tissue that contribute to erection. Prostate cancer treatments that prevent the flow of blood to any of these chambers may cause impotence as a side effect of treatment.
