Collagen Injections after Prostate Cancer Treatment

A collagen injection is a minor surgical procedure to treat stress incontinence caused by urethral sphincter dysfunction from prostate cancer treatment. Collagen injections help control urinary leakage by expanding the area around the urethra, which compresses the sphincter. With a local or spinal anesthesia, this procedure is routinely performed on an outpatient basis. To achieve optimal bladder control, the procedure may need to be repeated after a few months. Possible complications that can occur preceding a collagen injection include: urine retention, infection, and temporary erectile dysfunction. Since some people may have serious allergic reactions to collagen, potential candidates must have a skin test prior to treatment.
