The central
zone of the prostate gland is located in
the base right beneath the urinary bladder. The central
zone contains approximately 1/3 of the ducts that secret
fluid that helps make up semen. The central zone (as
well as the transition zone) begins to grow after men
turn 40 and may lead to a condition called benign prostatic
hyperplasia. Prostate cancer usually does not develop
in the central zone; when prostate cancer does develop
it is usually slower-growing type of cancer.
