cGMP after Prostate Cancer

cGMP is an abbreviation for cyclic guanosine monophosphate. cGMP causes the smooth muscles lining the arteries of the penis to relax thereby allowing blood to flow in and cause an erection; cGMP however is broken down by PDE 5. An upset in the correct balance of the cGMP and PDE 5 can result in impotence. Prostate cancer treatment has been associated with the occurrence of impotence after treatment, however, prostate cancer treatments are continually advancing in technique and technology that may result in fewer and less severe side effects.
