Antioxidants are
a substance that protects cells from the effects of
oxidation. Oxidation occurs naturally during the body’s
metabolism and releases free
radicals which react with other compounds and cause
cellular damage. It is thought that free radicals can
contribute to the development of cancer and that consuming
antioxidants will minimize these effects. Free radicals
are also thought to contribute to degeneration associated
with aging. The consumption of antioxidants may be beneficial
in preventing cancer, though people who decide to increase
sources of antioxidants in their diet will be consuming
larger amounts of fresh fruits and vegetables. Prostate
cancer has been linked with consumption of high levels
of fat, especially when the fat is coming from animal
sources. Dietary changes that decrease animal fat and
increase fresh fruits and vegetables may provide benefits
not directly linked to the consumption of antioxidants.
