Anti-androgens in Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy

Anti – androgens are a type of prostate cancer hormone therapy. The use of an anti-androgen will fill the receptors in the nuclei of prostate cells. These receptors are usually how prostate cells receive testosterone which fuels their growth as well as the growth of prostate cancer. Preventing the reception of testosterone can slow or even stop the growth and extension of prostate cancer for a period of time. Unlike surgical castration and medical castration, anti – androgens to not ablate hormones that are circulating through the blood stream. Because the actual levels of hormones do not drop, some men experience fewer or less severe side effects, especially those side effects of a sexual nature.
