Anti – androgen Withdrawal Effect in Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy

Anti – androgen withdrawal may occur after prostate cancer hormone therapy is stopped. Anti – androgens are a drug that prevent the receptors in the nuclei of the prostate cells from accepting testosterone which can slow or stop the growth or spread of prostate cancer temporarily. After a time, however, prostate cancer hormone therapy stops working as the cells adjust to the lack of testosterone and begin to grow again. When this occurs, doctors may stop the anti-androgen which may begin the anti-androgen withdrawal effect in which the prostate cells are stopped by the reintroduction of testosterone.
