Anastomosis is
the new connection between the bladder and the urethra
after the radical prostatectomy for the treatment of
prostate cancer. During the surgery, the surgeon must
remove the portion of the urethra that runs through
the transition zone of the prostate gland. Removal of
this part of the urethra may result in a shortening
of the penis. The anastomosis is a new connection that
is delicate; any tearing or damaging or this new connection
could result in long term complications. Prostate cancer
patients who have undergone the radical prostatectomy
should not lift anything over 10 pounds to avoid damaging
the anastomosis.
