How the Abdomen Relates to Prostate Cancer

The abdomen is the portion of the body between the thorax and the lower pelvis and is covered with muscle and lined with a thin membrane called the peritoneum. The abdomen is the site of the incision for the radical retropubic prostatectomy which is a prostate cancer treatment. The abdomen is also the site of the small incisions used in the radical laparoscopic prostatectomy and radical robotic prostatectomy, both which can go through or around the peritoneum (transperitoneal and extraperitoneal). The wall of the abdomen is composed of muscles, skin, and fat. Prostate cancer patients who have excess amounts of fat the abdomen may not be good candidates for these types of prostatectomies.
