Abarelix in Prostate Cancer Hormone Therapy

Abarelix a LHRH antagonist or a GnRH antagonist used for prostate cancer hormone therapy. LHRH agonists may cause hormone flare which can be painful or dangerous for advanced prostate cancer patients with bone metastasis. The design of abarelix ablates the testosterone produced in the testicles without hormone flare. Abarelix, however, can cause severe allergic reaction in about 5 percent of men. Abarelix is usually not recommenced in the treatment of prostate cancer unless the use of an agonist is not a viable option for a patient because of bone metastasis or if a patient insists on the agonist.
