Systemic radiation therapy is different from external radiation in that it delivers doses of radiation internally through radioactive drugs called radiopharmaceuticals. Taken as a liquid drink, capsules, or administered as an intravenous injection, these drugs travel through the bloodstream to the source of the prostate cancer and work to eradicate cancerous cells. Typically, patients who receive systemic radiation therapy are required to stay in the hospital or care facility for one to two days until the radiation in their body has reached a safe level.
