Red Blood Cells Function and Prostate Cancer Chemotherapy

Red blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and are responsible for the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer may begin chemotherapy drugs, which may destroy bone marrow that creates the red blood cells. Chemotherapy destroys all cells that divide quickly, such as cancer cells, but also bone marrow. Patients undergoing chemotherapy are at risk for developing anemia.
