Radioresistant
prostate cancer occurs after a patient has undergone
brachytherapy or external radiation therapy and the
prostate cancer returns. Especially after brachytherapy,
the prostate cancer cells have undergone extremely high
doses of radiation that killed cancerous tissue. Because
the prostate cancer returns, the cells are most likely
radioresistant, meaning that they are unaffected by
radiation treatment and unlikely to be affected by a
second treatment.
