Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive procedure that uses high-frequency electrical energy to heat a needle inserted through the skin in order to destroy diseased tissue and, in the process, trigger a reaction in the immune system to continually attack the disease. Typically, patients with recurrent prostate cancer use this technique since it can be repeated as necessary. Patients looking for relief from pain caused by a metastasized tumor also use RFA as treatment.
