Peritoneum and Prostate Cancer

The peritoneum is a membrane located inside the muscles, skin, and fat of the abdomen. The peritoneum encases most of the internal organs within the abdomen. Prostate cancer patients who are undergoing the laparoscopic prostatectomy or the robotic prostatectomy will have surgery that either goes through the peritoneum or around the peritoneum. Prostate surgery that goes through the peritoneum is called transperitoneal. Prostate cancer surgery that goes around the peritoneum is called extraperitoneal.
