Nerve grafting is a form of nerve repair used to maintain nerve function after the nerves have been damaged, such as during surgery. For prostate cancer patients, nerve grafts may help improve potency if nerve bundles need to be removed during surgery, and if a nerve-sparing technique is not an option. Surgeons will splice nerves from other areas in the body, like the ankle, with the ends of nerves cut from the prostate gland immediately following a surgical procedure. Grafting the nerves promotes regrowth of the severed nerves for healthy nerve function.
