By using detailed images obtained from ultrasound (US), computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), position emission tomography (PET), or x-ray, radiologists are able to pinpoint the exact size, location, and coordinates of a tumor. Patients undergoing image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) will have baseline images gathered and compared with images done just prior to and during treatment sessions for the most accurate position and dose of radiation. IGRT is used in conjunction with external radiation, specifically 3D conformal radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT). IGRT treatments are typically administered in daily sessions, Monday through Friday, for 5-9 weeks with each session taking approximately 15 to 45 minutes.
