The DRE
is also known as the digital rectal exam and is one
of the diagnostic tests used for prostate cancer. During
the test, a doctor will use a latex rubber as well as
a lubricant and use a finger to manually examine the
prostate gland. The peripheral zone of the prostate
gland is directly next to rectum, so any irregularities
can be detected by a doctor. A healthy prostate gland
feels smooth, soft, and symmetrical. Any hardness, jaggedness,
or lumpiness could be indications of prostate cancer.
